Formal mens scarves: When wearing a suit with a scarf, should the scarf go underneath the jacket or on top?

I'm going to a ball tomorrow and got myself a formal black scarf to go with my suit. its just that i have no idea if the scarf should go underneath my jacket or over it...

in all the old movies where they wear them it looks like it's wrapped arund the outer collar and then tucked in on the front.

I think you can wear it either way..depends on how you like it. But I like when a guy wears it crossed and beneath his suit jacket..providing it looks good that way (the colors).
