Why do we focus on these and other trivial issues?
Why do we waste three weeks in the Senate debating a flag burning amendment to the Constitution?
Why do we care about gay marriage?
When there's a war in Iraq, our education system (excluding college) is failing compared to most other OECD (developed) countries, crime is increasing, poverty is increasing, North Korea has nukes, Iran is getting nukes, Hugo Chavez is trying to turn Latin America communist, Sudanese children are being murdered relentlessly, Somalia is becoming Talibanized, the Sub-Saharan AIDS epidemic, etc. why do we care about such trivial issues?
Is it not pathetic that the masses are so easily focused on these unimportant matters?
The politicians, it seems, simply exploit the masses by bringing up issues that don't really matter, but they know are easy to draw the attention of America. Then they fail to address real ones.
Is there any realistic way to fix this problem? I fail to see one; maybe you're smarter.

I'd just like to add that both parties are guilty of this. It just so happens that both of the issues I thought of off the top of my head were pushed by Republicans.

I agree 100% Since when does the topic of gay marriage take precendence over the life of a child, or flag burning become an issue debated as a top priority over that of the failing public education system? Why do we concentrate more of our time looking at issues so petty compared to the extreme social decline facing our country? Why has apathy become rampant and have fiscal aquisitions become all-consuming? You have someone sayiing "Gay marriage? Not in MY country!" How about poverty? That's ok? -- Children without proper medical care? Not your problem? -- When do we wake up and take responsibility and how did our country get to this place? Where is our sense of community? Until these fundamental questions are addressed by us as a society as a whole, as well as our government--we are in REAL trouble.

Who produces more .the 5 engineers who sit in an office for months going over every little detail and collecting millions or the 2000 workers who build the finished product .
You have it backwards my friend .Making ones self more usefull in the economy does not mean joining the ranks of theives who are robbing the people blind .
It is not the stock broker on wallstreet that should earn the million dollar pay check .Its the 40,000 workers who's combined effort makes it possible for small business owners to invest in the market to pay for benefits and retirements for themselfs and the workers .
Pushing a pen was the job for the family idiot who had no skills or ability .Accountants where a dime a dozen and paid little .Today however working with money is all the rage .Nothing is being built in america anymore .Instead of new plants opening in america we have investment oppertunity's .The job and the work people do makes this country great Not how we manipulate money and markets that have winners and losers .
It is no wonder gambling is the new past time in america .It reflects our new values .
Only problem is when you invest money and lose it some how you still manage to profit regardless.
We need laws that protect investors from the huge frauds that occur in our nation .Insurance ,banks ,energy companies, all need to respect the consumer and not try to swindle him .Snake oil salesman as they were called years ago are back in suites and ties .
If you can feel ok about what you do for a living good for you .No one owes another a living of the sweat off their own brow though and every single person swindled by the insurance companies should take up arms .Everyone who's pension disappeared during the corporate raider days should be paid out of the money those theives took .
I do not know what values you have been raised with but stealing with a pen and balance sheet is no better then robbing a bank .For all your education i imagine you looking down your nose at the working man who has made it possible for you to cheat him out of what he has produced . Believing your are a hard working fair individual who respects others its hard for me to believe you actually look your self in the mirror each day and do not see the criminal you have become .
This is my responce to your answer of my question as you have no contact address .

personally, i dont see what the big deal is about gay people marrying each other. I guess if your a homophobe it bothers you, but otherwize, why should it? as for the flag burning, i'm personally agianst it. I am a patriot all the way, i love my country, and i plan on joining the military soon. on a personal level, flag burning bothers me. If you don't like America, there are plenty of Canadians who wouldn't mind having you. go move there. But you're right. Congress shouldn't be bothering with such trivial issues. i guess that's part of being congress. don't know if there is any real way to fix this problem, but if there is, let me know!

I'm actually a lot smarter. The answer is term limits. One term in any political office above dog catcher and you are out of politics. If a lot of people would simply not vote for a single incumbent we would get normal people in political office pretty quickly. This way we could take care of all the problems you mention, plus flag burning and gay marriage.

For the record, I'd like to point out that flag burning is perhaps the most self-perpetuating non-issue in American history. In almost every documented case, "protest" flag burnings are done specifically to protest laws against flag burning. There could be no greater example of posturing and non-productive electioneering by either side. If they stopped threatening to ban it, no one would bother doing it!

Becuase the retards in DC continually focus on wedge issues to divide us. That way, we can't unite against them and straighten out our gov. They are also so useless on other matters that the only ones they can sort of deal with are the wedge issues.
Gay marriage and flag burning are so low on the priority list that they don't even merit discussion in congress/senate. We have way more important issue to deal with

Yes it really is a joke isn't it. This country has some very serious problems and the republicans solution is to stop gay people from getting married. All part of their do-nothing congress.

The government of the people, by the people and for the people has perished. In its place we have politicians who are pimps to lobbyists and special interst groups. I think we should have definite term limits to bring fresh enthusiastic faces into our government and we need to seek to elect people that are considered to be common folks who have more of a barometer and sensitivity to first the real needs of this country and to extend humanitarian assistance where it really needs to be focused throughout the world.

The reason that republicans focus on these things is to divide the country and scare the ignorant masses into voting for them. They have no good answers to the real questions. They are not trying to make the world better. They are simply trying to remain in power.
