"When you look closely, the show is really a study in the shattering of one’s hopes and illusions. You need look no further than the opening credits for the answers. While the sassy theme music swells, Carrie, a vision in a frilly pink tutu, any little girl’s idea of a contemporary fairytale princess, prances around the city, searching desperately for her Prince Charming. Surprise, surprise: he never arrives. Not only does she never find her guy, a bus with her own likeness on it passes and douses her ballerina outfit with gutter water. The rest of the series basically mimics this cycle of endless optimism followed by endless disappointment."

"Decked out in a ballet tutu (a nod to her dancer roots) and standing in the middle of the Manhattan streets of chaos (evoking images of That Girl), Parker opened her show by seemingly laying her soul bare for the world see."

I always wondered that too - but some of her outfits were pretty riduculous, so I thought that was the reason.
