The Quran itself does not specifiacally prohibit dancing but it does have passages about modesty. The official stance on dancing is that a woman should not dance infront of people who are not her family. This includes her husband, mother, father, sisters, brothers, aunts, and uncles. It gets more complicated when it's a cousin or in-law. Most would say it is wrong to dance in front of your brother in-law. Some would say it's wrong to dance in front of a male cousin (because your cousin is someone whom you could marry). Friends are another grey area. Most muslims agree you cannot dance in front of a male friend but most would at least tolerate dancing in front of a female friend provided that she is also a "believer". You are in general not supposed to dance in front of anyone who is not a "believer". The type of dancing may also determine if it's acceptable. Most people tolerate dancing local folk dances as long as it's not done as part of an actual performance but more of a spur of the moment thing done at a gathering. Weddings are also a slight exception to the rule. Many women dance at a wedding and it tends to be overlooked. However many very devout muslim women do not feel it's acceptable t dance fr anyone but their husband. Under no circumstance is it considered apprpriate to perform publicly if you are muslim.
This veiw is strictly held by Sunni (Traditional) Muslims and Shi'ite Mulisms. The Sufi sects are slightly less strict. In Sufism (the ones that are commonly known as "whirling dervishes") it is considered ok to dance to free your soul and pen it up to Allah (God). However not every type of dancing is seen as being appropriate for this purpose. Whirling is cnsidered appropriate but something like bellydancing, tap dance, ballet, salsa, etc... would not. Pretty much the same rules would apply to dancing if it is not whirling. However Sufi are the most lenient of the whole group. But men are the ones who traditionally would perform it in front of others. There have been recently more women performing it but they generally learn to do the dance to perform it not for religious purposes. Dancers who are "muslim" are generally only nominally so and perform Hajj only when their reputations are so dangerously low that they risk public attack. However after they have returned from Hajj they soon return to dancing and then later in life when they are older and losing favor to younger dancers they may perform Hajj again and then take up the veil or just take up the veil. At that point they generally become moderate muslims.

Traditionally, Islamic music has been limited to the human voice and percussion (drum).

The Mawlawi Sufi, praise Allah through a ceremonial dance called Sema. Participants dance themselves into a trance, turning in circles that symbolize the teachings of Sufi.

Well I'm not muslim but i do have a muslim friend and her family is semi-conservative. But when they have all girl parties they do dance. So it depends if you come from a conservative group or a more liberal one. I'm not sure if it's explicitly forbidden but it might be a different story if you're dancing with a guy. But girl if you feel like dancing, then by all means...BUST A MOVE!

I know of at least one reknowned Sufi mystic who was famous for dancing - in fact, she used to dance naked, singing ecstatically. Her name was Lalla, and she was (and is still) absolutely revered by the people of Kashmir. She lived in the 14th century, and like Rumi she was a Sufi poet.

From one of her songs:
“Dance, Lalla, with nothing on but air. Sing, Lalla, wearing the sky. Look at this glowing day! What clothes could be so beautiful, or more sacred?”

Yes. There is a very good description of Dabka, a Lebanese dance posted by Cartier35 about 2 weeks ago. I give it a two thumbs up rating.
