Albany has a local reputation for an intermittent "Smell," which actually comes from a Weyerhaeuser paper mill in nearby Millersburg.

Stink bugs....
Oregonians asked to sniff out Asian stink bug

PORTLAND (AP) — Beware of foul odors this winter!

The Oregon Department of Agriculture is asking the public to help detect the brown marmorated stink bug, a potentially serious agricultural pest from Asia that typically moves indoors in cold weather.

Last year, Oregon became the first state west of the Mississippi River to report the presence of the insect.

Agriculture officials received dozens of reports about the exotic pest following a widely publicized pest alert.

The state and the federal Animal Plant Health Inspection Service found a population of the bugs in the Ladd’s Addition neighborhood of southeast Portland.

The insect since has been confirmed in other parts of Portland and could have possibly spread throughout the Willamette Valley and other parts of Oregon.

The stink bug has an appetite for many crops but could be especially damaging to the tree fruit industry in Oregon, officials say.

The brown marmorated stink bug is native to Asia — including Japan, China, Taiwan, and Korea. It was first found in the United States in 2001.

Until the summer of 2004, the insect was confined to a handful of Eastern states, including Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and West Virginia.

While similar to Oregon’s native stink bugs, the brown marmorated species could pose a serious problem because it has no natural predators, parasites, or diseases to help control its population.

Like several other insects in Oregon — including box elder bugs and Asian multicolored lady beetles — the brown marmorated stink bug seeks shelter in homes during the fall and winter months.

If the insect becomes established, it can enter homes by the thousands.

The stink bugs are harmless, but as the name suggests, they can release an unpleasant odor when disturbed.
