At only 5 mos old, he'll be happier with the box and the wrapping paper than the gift.

Get him a savings bond.

A nice hardback book, something his mom/dad enjoyed as a child, with an inscription from grandma.

I would suggest something like the "Laugh and Learn- Learning Puppy" by fisher-price it is for kids that are 6 months old to 3 years old, so it would be a good age group for your grandchild. It teaches children abc's, 123's, parts of the body, colors it sings songs, and there is games. The little bone the dog has lights up to the music also. It is really soft and my daughter loves it still I got it for her when she was younger shes going to be 3 in January.

If you go to http://www.fisher-price.com/us/toys/toysbyage/default.asp?agegrade=2 you can search by age better than any other toy website like toys r us or walmart.

Money in a savings account, or stock certificates - can use toward college
silver cup and baby spoon and fork
don't get the electronic stuff - my nephew got a ton of that - lights up, plays music, etc. - not interactive enough, and gets on the parents' nerves. Then doesn't get played with at all.
A cute snowsuit for 9 month-1 year size (depending if it's big for its age, then a larger size.)

I think that personalized Christmas ornaments are a wonderful idea. My parents buy one nice ornament for my son each Christmas - after the holidays I box them up and when he's grown and ready to move out on his own he'll have a nice collection. I also get him a special ornament each year and when I box it up I place a special note with it for him to read in the future. Merry Christmas!

Haba, Melissa & Doug, and Under the Nile all make beautiful, high quality toys that are safe to chew on (as will inevitably happen with a 5-month-old!) and fun to play with.

Oh yeah, and a huge cuddly crammed animal, youthful ones can't in any respect have sufficient crammed animals.
