Hi,
Unusualy rapid heat increase, a good rain after a dry heat spell, and also a dose of readily available fertilizer can cause this.
Mostly I believe though is a heavy rain during or after a heat spell.
Cabbage will do the same thing, it will crack wide open.
Hope this helps, Dave

Some varieties are prone to splitting. Being too ripe is not
necessarily the case either - I've seen green ones starting to
split. Some things come with home grown tomatoes - spitting
is one. However, give me a split homegrown over a store
bought anytime.

Tomatos split due to excess watering or fertilizer. The inside is growing faster than the skin which causes it to split. To prevent, make sure you regulate the watering and fertilizer.
