I would recommend both books and a class. And perhaps videos and cd's, anything that could help you learn. But December of 2007 is a pretty difficult goal, unless you study every day. I've taken Spanish classes at school for five years now, and while I would be able to take care of myself if I was dumped in a Spanish speaking country, I wouldn't say I'm fluent. Realistically, the easiest way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it; spending a few months in a Spanish speaking country would rapidly improve your Spanish. Best of luck to you!
