The main intent of the war, so we were told, was to install democracy in the country. The people had a free vote (just how free is open to debate.) and they chose a mainly shia government.

Now, USA can't turn round and say they don't support this since it was the result of democracy and to go against it would be to deny the main reason that they say they are there for.

Shia make up 60% of Iraq. They are the majority, yet I wouldn't say the USA gives them full support. We are well aware of their fanatic behavoir, but we need to stablize the country, and the best way to do that is to work with the majority.

To create CHAOS,but this will go down as biggest mistake in Iraq by the Americans. Now Shites are playing in the hands of Iran. This happened for the First time in 400 years. It is even a high time now to get rid of Sistani,Sadr and Maliki

I agree, the Shia are the more fanatic of the two major sects, and the least secular. They're the ones who beat themselves on their holidays till they draw blood. The neocons just felt a religious kinship with them. They each understand the desire to base government on religious laws.-- the US has its 10 Commandments (which really belong in evey courthouse as the foundation of our laws, you know) and the Shia have the sharia.

because the Baathists (and Sadam) are Sunni

if you are trying to use political reasoning to understand the war you will be frustrated

try economics

the war was started by th US, and the major US players were defense contractors (Cheney and friends), defense contractors need wars to make money so they create wars, the longer and more pointless the better

as for the bombing of the barracks and the Iran embassy takeover, the Shiites had good reason to be pissed at us
