If I could cheat your '86 limitation, I'd say that vintage U2 is still the best.

However, U2 also made many of their most interesting music, especially B-sides, after 1986. Here are my choice tracks...

Pre-1986:

Out Of Control (from Boy, from 1980).

Post-'86:

Lady With The Spinning Head (B-side from Even Better Than the Real Thing, from '91).

Numb (from Zooropa, '93).

Favourite cover version by U2:

Satellite Of Love (B-side from One, from '92). A Lou Reid song.

"One" has to be U2's best song since 1986. I'm very partial to "Walk On" and "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own"

I don't think you can boil it down to one song. They have evolved so much with every album that I believe each one stands as it's own piece.

Critically, most will say their best came off of either Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby or All That You Can't Leave Behind.

Here are some of my favs (I have tons):
-Bullet the Blue Sky
-One
-Staring at the Sun
-Stay (amazing song)
-Stuck in a Moment

can't we have any from before 1986? That's when the best stuff was coming through. The guy who said "New Year's Day" (1982?) isn't far wrong.
