good question!!! It is what is known as a traditional song... Many people think that the animals wrote it but that is incorrect... the song has been around for years... there are many versions of it out there, I personally like the Bob Dylan version from 1961 off his self-titled album... it is very gritty and it stays true to the tradition of the song by that it is a girl narrating it
