Rule Number One: Don't try to follow EVERY trend! It's really easy to get caught up in the cute trends you see in Cosmo or at the mall, but if you know in your heart that you don't have a good body type for leggings or a miniskirt, then you'd probably be better off not going for that look. Also, if you can tell that a trend isn't going to be lasting beyond the season (like bubbles skirts or the whole 80's look, probably...), try to buy those items at a cheap store like Forever 21 or Charlotte Russe. Then you'll only have to shell out maybe $15 for an item that may not last in the fashion world. (I mean, I bet all those people who bought $150 Uggs are kicking themselves right now, whereas I got the knock-off ones for like $20!) One thing I learned recently that I ntend to keep as a fashion rule for the rest of my life now is, just because something is trendy and they're showing it in stores and magazines, it doesn't always make it an appropriate look for work. I got majorly busted for wearing leggings with a skirt yesterday (see my question about them...) and now I'm going to make an effort to keep the trends for myself on nights and weekends and dress in a simpler, more classic way during the workday. After all, it's not like my boss reads Vogue!

I think the best advice I could give is to understand your style preferences, your body type, and what colors look best on you. No matter how popular something is....it might not look good on you. But, just try to make a complete look with everything you wear....consider your clothing, shoes, accessories, hair, makeup, etc.....because even the most beautiful dress can look bad if nothing else that you wear matches it. :)
