I have two outside condensers and I need to knoiw if they should be covered completely over the winter season to keep snow and other items out of them or does covering them create a situation that allows rust to form due to lack of airflow though the unit

Are they condensers for A/C ONLY?
if they are then yes cover them.

if they are heat pumps then they are used in the heat cycle also and NO you can't cover them.

YES
many condensers have a heating element so, shut off power to the unit at the disconnect located outside.
then when you cover the unit leave 3-4 inches on the bottom exposed.
they do make covers that fir many units however, you can put a small tarp over it with three bungee cords one around and two over each side. boat wrap works the best but costs alot.

I would cover them, in some areas this will prevent leaves etc. from falling into them and causing you to have them cleaned next summer. also do not believe the cover would cause as much rust as leaving them open would.

You will get opinions all for both sides here. Fact is if you have the time to cover it properly then the unit will look cosmetically better over time. Proper maintenance is more important to its functioning better over time.

in case your compressor has a crankcase heater, or makes use of one stay leg to shop the refrigerant out of the compressor oil... you're in basic terms inviting mice to nest in a sheltered, heated ecosystem. i do not advise it. in case you want to shop junk out... decrease a chunk of plywood a similar length because the accurate and carry it down with a rock or cinderblock. in case you would possibly want to tarp it... turn off the breaker to the outdoor unit, and be particular to untarp and reset the breaker an afternoon before you take advantage of the A/C.

I wouldn't cover them. There are fan motors in there. If you close them up, the motors will get moisture in them and possibly lock up. Leave them open to the air so they dry out. If they are heat pumps, they will be running when it is cold. If you cover them, you will be in big trouble.
