I had a dream that I was laying down and a great dane (dog) rested it's big heavy head on the side of my head.It was really heavy and was smothering me and I panicked. I couldn't seem to move and I started dying. I had to gather all my energy and use all my strength to pull myself up and away from the dog. As I did that I woke up sitting up.And I felt so tired when I woke up like I was in a deep,deep,deep sleep.Almost like I was on the verge of death.

You got many good answers...I think everyone is on track. But Jillolli touched on something I thought about...
What are some things you think about when you imagine this breed of dog? They are very large dogs, though they are generally friendly and loyal.
What everyone said about feeling pressure of stress in your life sounds right...but the dog makes me wonder. Maybe the dog represents someone who plays a big role in your life (the size of the dog) and is causing you to feel trapped or smothered. It could be someone who is not intentionally making you feel this way (speaking of the nature of the dog) or someone who has good intentions in their involvement in your life.
Just my thought...
Or as someone said...it could just be an odd dream with sleep paralysis....

Only you can figure out what it really means. Take the dream and break it down into parts. Like the great Dane dog. What is the first thing that comes to mind. What comes to mind when you thing of his head resting next to yours. what is the first thing you think of when you think of being smothered. Once you break the dream into parts. Analyze each part and see what comes to mind.(maybe the dog will remind you of your youth, the resting a warm feeling and the smothering of being trapped. You feel trapped as an adult and miss the comforting feeling you had as a child with no responsibilities)

Freud would say you want to have sex with your mom and a great dane at the same time, but the real problem is probably stress in some aspect of your life. Think about what could make you stressed in your day to day and try to resolve that. Or you are a wuss who watched Cujo too many times.

To dream about a dog that fondles you indicates great gain and constant friends. To hear the barking of dogs foretells news of a depressing nature. Difficulties are more likely to follow.

Dog - spelled backwards is God. Sounds to me like you struggling with the ego self and your sprirutal essence which is who you really are. The death your experiences is really the death of the ego, and living your life from an enlightened perspective. Enlightened thinking is not an automatic process; it is a skill which we learn only if we take the time and make the effort. In fact, enlightened thinking is a process which runs counter to much of the automatic functioning of the mind. For example, our minds usually accept the dogmas and myths of our culture. Most peoples' minds become programmed with the beliefs of their era and society. They don't think for themselves but let their parents, their friends, their favorite TV show, or their nation implant ideas in them. To be able to form sound opinions and make effective decisions, you must know how to think critically. Enlightened thinking begins with recognizing how we have allowed others to think for us, requiring unusual effort. Enlightened thinking involves the careful consideration of multiple points of view and keeping our minds open to alternative sources of information. Unless we work at becoming critical thinkers, the natural tendency is to limit our ideas to only those that are easily available, never really discovering or considering alternative sources of information. As we develop the skill to think critically we learn to suspend judgment until we consider a variety of ideas or plans. Critical thinkers provide support for their beliefs, not merely holding opinion for no reason at all, merely on whim.

Dog = your support
laying down = failure

It seems like you are seeking for your support. Perhaps you don't fully trust your support. Projecting dog as your support, you subconsciously try to tell yourself that in life you are losing control. You need to trust your support to struggle in your life

Something is bogging you down, and you don't like it. The fact that you didn't die is a good thing I heard it is bad when you die in your dream.
