I'm going to assume that all of the computers are running Windows XP. Within Windows XP you can enable "internet connection sharing" on one computer and have the other 3 connect through that computer. But you'd have to install a second network card and then configure all of the computers.
The easiest answer would be "yes, you have to purchase a router in order to share the internet connection with multiple computers". A router would also act as a switch for the computers.
I would suggest a wireless router (you can always disable the wireless incase you don't have any computers that have wireless capabilities). Linksys seems to be the brand of choice for most people, but other brands are cheaper.

If your ISP allows you more than one IP address, you can get by with a switch. If you're limited to a single IP address you'll need a router.

routers are cheap, they usually have the switch built in. I'm not even sure if they make them as seperate units anymore.

You need a router or atleast a splitter to hook up 2.
Try splitting a splitter, and then split that splitter with another splitter...should get a few hooked up....lol
