Look near your throttle-body,which is on the top of the engine where the air tube come's in.Attached to it will be a cylinder type part with a connector coming off it.This is called the IAC(idle air control).take it off,it should be two bolts, and clean it with carb cleaner or type spray.Reinstall it and see if it helps. You might need a new IAC valve,If it's not your IAC valve then it is probrably your EGR valve stuck open. Both of these are easy to replace, simply buy a chilton or hayne's manual at your local auto parts store and look in them for the location of the two sensor's.For general purpose's go ahead and change your fuel filter also,as this can cause intermittent stalling and is a maintenance part.

I had a similar problem. I investigated the vacuum system, changed the plugs, plug wires, replaced the distributor... replaced the oxygen sensor, replaced the computer. My car is a MX6, 2.2L 89' non turbo, 250,000 miles.
I finally discovered the accordionan hose running from the air filterer to the injectors had a rip in it. Air bypassed the air filter and the air flow regulator. My car had attempted to compensate by throwing more fuel at the engine.
The bellows or resonance chamber connected to this air hose is what damaged the hose. It was loose. The constant wiggling fatigued the air hose rubber. Since I put a "$20 used" hose in place and bolted down this resonance box... my car has run great.
Other problems that showed up was engine racing, too much power at low RPMs, bad idling. Stallingacceleratingrating from a stop. Bad fuel economy.
I had to feel the hose section by section, moving the hose around... and the rip appeared...It was nearly half way through the hose.
Hope this helps.

try changing your fuel filter and put some engine cleaner in the gas. If it was a fuel pump it wouldn't even go after you pumped the gas. Maybe the carborator?

You can set your idle up, but it sounds like a hose.
