48 x .20 = 9.60

48 - 9.60 = $38.40

Dear It's Me: Schooled as a past generation - we seemed to have been taught a much more simple system of calculation.

You cannot get Shayna's method to work. You do NOT divide, you multiply, Shayna. Totals from Percentages are generally arrived at by MULTIPLYING. You derive the answer and subtract it from the original price. If the question is WHAT PART of a figure (90) is 60, then you divide the smaller figure (60) by the larger figure (90). This gives you the Percentage of what part 60 is of 90.

When you have the percentage already given, you multiply for the Total figure.

In my age group's schooling days, we would have SIMPLY multiplied $48 by 4 tires. After getting the full price, we would have multiplied that price by .20%. Getting that answer, subtract that from the original price.

Looking at the calculations your age group is going thru to obtain a simple figure amazed me ! Any comments on the differences of how your age group writes out it's calculations compared to what we did in the 1950's I would enjoy hearing. I didn't raise children. What has happened? It's sooo complex????

My method: 4 X $48.00 = $192.00 I want 20% off.
$192.00 X .20 = $38.40. Subtract from original price:
$38.40 - $192.00 = $153.60 TOTAL Price after discount.

Best regards, Lana

1 tyre = $48
the $48 represents the 100%
we need to know the 20% off final price... so n reality we are being asked (100% - 20%) 80%

100% = $48
80% = ?

48 x 80 / 100 = $38.40 per tyre

But a car has 4 tyres

1 tyre = $38.40
4 tyres = ?

38.40 x 4 = $153.60

Let's start with - so what's 20% of $48

48 * (20/100) = 9.60

since that's the reduction you take it off the original price

48 - 9.60 = $38.40

That's possibly the answer but I'm guessing she's going to buy 4 tires, so put the last line "or $153.60 for 4"

note, a 20% reduction is same as saying it's 80%, so you could have done

48 * (80/100) = 38.40

original price 48 $
20% off so sale price = 48 - 48*20/100 = 38.4 $ each
so for 4 tires = 4 * 38.4 = 153.6 $

multiply 48 times 4 for the total cost. then multiply by .80 (80 percent) to get the discounted price.

yeah, you could multiply the total price by .20 (twenty percent) and then subtract that from the total price but then you have an extra step.

The answer is $38.40. The price is 80% of $48.

80% = 80/100 = 0.8

0.8 * $48 = $38.40.
