I drive a 1997 GMC suburban has 106,600+ miles on it and this is the only vehicle i have , cant afford a new one.. transmission broke last tuesday..my mechanic says to put a new one in for $2300, this other mechanic might be able to put a refurbished one for about $1000. so anyone out there who can give me some answers for this qustion would be great!
The first mechanic says ne dont believe in refurbished because the break down in 2-3 months...and a lot of my friends says its ok.
I have 3 children and we have a lot of activities that I drive them too..so I really need an affordalbe but reliable one.
Help please!!! rental cars cost too much!

go with what you can afford. rebuilt transmissions are very reliable so dont listen to everything you hear. you can get very good warranties on rebuilt transmissions from Jasper and others. prices will change depending on the length of the warranty and companies. shop around. you can even get very reliable transmissions out of junk yards and save several hundred $'s.......................

Check the yellow pages for a local transmission repair shop that is certified by ATRA. The logo should be in the ad. If not, call. Get several estimates for the repair. It may not need replacement, since you don't say what the problem is.
If a tranny is rebuilt, all of the worn parts are replaced, and it will be just as good as a new one. Many shops give a minimum 6 month warranty.
ABOVE ALL, do not go to a transmission store like AAMCO or any other national chain. They grossly overcharge for parts.

I don't want to give you advice and watch it backfire because you have children, but I have an '84 Cutlass, I put a refurbished tranny in it for 1300, and a refurbished engine in it for 2300...I have been driving the car for 3 years since. No problems. Just make sure that the tranny is refurbished and not used or out of a junk yard. $1,000 sounds a little cheap for a suburban. Good luck.

If it's at all possible, I would try and get a second opinion. Not that your mechanic is wrong, it's just that with trannies, you can't be too certain.
As for the new versus rebuild, I'd go new. Look for a warranty as well. Rebuilt ones will be finnicky and may give you a hard time down the road...we've done this at myu house twice and have had ZERO luck with either.

A new one is always best. But, if you're looking to save money, a rebuilt transmission is about as good. I've installed many of them without any problems. Just be sure to get some kind of warranty with it. You'll probably be alright if the tech is qualified. Check his certifications. Hope this helps.

I would check into having it repaired or rebuilt..It might be a bad converter or something simple. A rebuilt tranny should last fine I have been rebuilding trannys for years and havent had any last less than 3 years and I abuse mine. But make sure you use a established trans service..

i have been a mechanic for 36 years and i just rebuilt my AOD in my 95 mustang, yours is even less to rebuild try and have your trans rebuilt ,then you know what you have. check with the BBB in your town for a good trans shop should not cost more than 1000.00 to rebuild .the kit and rebuilt torque converter should be about 300.00 . good luck. Make sure that the rebuilt trans is done by a certified mechanic. If so it will hold up just as good as a factory rebuild. just make sure that you have any trans serviced at the mileage specked.

i have NEVER had good luck with a rebuilt tranny, they really do go after a few months, i don't know of any one who has had good results.......go with new one.............also, what you could do if pressed for $$, you can go to a junk yard & get one from a wrecked suburban, why i say wrecked? cause 9 times out of 10, when they are wrecked, theres nothing wrong with the engine or trasmission.
