How can I tell if a wheel bearing is bad by looking at it? I know it'll scrape as I drive, but how by visual inspection?

It will have a discoloration to it if it's bad. If not pack it with grease reinstall it and be on you way.

The best way i have found to check a wheel bearing that i cannot see any problem. Is to clean all the grease out it. Then reinstall it on the spindle and spend the tire to hear any bumping or grinding sounds. it's hard to see all the rollers completely. When you are sure that it is not bad repack with grease. Best thing to do is if you think it's making a sound replace it.

Hi
What kind if car? Is it the front on a front wheel drive? How old?
Most cars have a sealed wheel bearing now days and you can not do a visual on them. The nose you are hearing makes me think you need to replace it ASAP.

Get the wheel off the ground and spin it. Brakes scrape . Bearings usually rumble.

Thoroughly clean it of all grease, visually inspect it, then spin it. It should be pretty quiet. If it is bad, you will know it.
