If you're already replacing, and it's used even semi-regularly, consider installing a DC powered unit that runs on a marine battery which is trickle charged via the wall outlet. This way in a power outtage, the pump will continue to work uninterrupted.

We lost power last week, during a terrible rain storm of course. 5 minutes after the power went out, my sump alarm went off as it was filling up. I need to buy one of these myself, but I own a generator and have neighbors who are normally around to assist me.

submersible pumps although a little more costly are the way to go they are quieter more powerfull and last longer the pedestal pumps also tend to seize up when not in use for a while mine did because it sat idle thru a dry summer because the motor is on the top, they tend to vibrate more

The submersable pumps I have found to be easier to maintain.Just keep the float free of any obstructions, and away you go!Pedestal pumps tend to wear out faster.
