Not sure how many women these days would put up with being told what to wear! But some women do and it is to keep their partner happy and to avoid confrontation or friction.Tragically this is a necessary action with some men.
The more pressing question surely is why do men feel the need to tell them to cover up? Shouldnt you be proud of the person you 'love' and how they look?
I put it down to massive insecurities and I truly believe some men would actually pee on their partners if they thought it would help mark their terriotory !!!!!!!!!!

i am getting tired of this argument. Women tend not to want to be tortured beaten or even killed if they do not follow their societal customs. And who is to say their ways are better or worse then ours? I am a free Canadian woman. Sometimes i dress up to impress a man and that means itchy bitchy nylons, shoes you men would never dream of wearing yourselves and yes even a corset. If I were the type who was raised to be in a veil and found it comfortable to remain in a veil in a free country then I would continue to ware my veil. It is really no skin off my backsides or anyone else's for my choice. Some of the ways a middle eastern woman dresses are truly better for some of the climates we experience in Canada compared to our cheep clothing that don't necessarily do keeping warm or cool justice. So if it is a mater of choice for these women then let them be comfortable! And if it is not a mater of choice then hope that someday that culture will learn to value their women better, But stop harping about it because when push comes down to shove another persons or cultures choice is not ours to control. Live and let live!

All women do not let men tell them what to wear, first of all. For those that do, perhaps it is because the man "suggested" or told her he likes seeing her in particular items, so she is doing it because he asked. Also, keep in mind that "covering up" for some women is part of their religion.
Why don't you take off your veil and get out of that tired suit and boring shoes that pinch those bunions, baby. Put on some low riding jeans that show your boring booty...yeah, baby, that's more like it! :D

I think you should let people choose what they want to wear..it has been their religion for a hell of a lot longer than any of us have been around, what they wear does no-one any harm, how they practice their religion does no-one any harm.
I think you should concentrate on the important matters at hand like terrorism, the judicial system and allowing the UK police to have more power to deal with trouble on the streets (ie like how the American and German police handle things).

You are kind of creepy. However, I agree. Women should wear whatever is comfortable to them and it is WRONG for a man to try and change what a woman wears. It really pisses me off when boyfriend's want their girlfriends to cover up and change their style. Men are really insecure sometimes!

Well, I dress as I want, and my husband don't use to say anything about it, I think in some cases is only that men use to be jealous, and more women don't want to argue so, they wear what their husband says and that's all...
But you may ask also, why do women let tv or magazines tell them what to wear and worse what to weight? why to wear a so short skirt that you cannot seat in anywhere or to make any movement...? why to avoid eat to dress in a super model's tail?

Well the mere fact that Jack tried to tell this woman to take her veil off and she refused rather suggests the basis for the question is erroneous...oh wait it was men who told her to wear it in the first place...me's all confuseded now...

Knob! I don't think you understand the issue!
Jack Straw did not tell her what to wear, he just mentioned it woul dbe nice to have seen her face to face rather than through a veil!
Men tell women to wear just as women tell men - "I like you in that top" just means that! Unless they are control freaks?
