My first video game system was Atari 2600. I loved all the games on that and they were more challenging and you could play them over and over. There was no "beating the game" back then. Maybe you are too young to remember. I also loved mario bros. I have to agree with your point though. It's all become so visual and realistic. The cartoonish games were much more fun. And I also love tetris!

I agree for the most part. These days if you really wana get into a 3d game you have to spend many days just learning the controls. And once you do, then you can determine if the gameplay is fun or not. But if you've played Mario64, then you know theres awesome 3D games that are just as fun as 2D games too.

I agree to a certain extent. Graphics are not the be all and end all because a year from now there will be a similar game with better visual appeal. I don't know that it's fair to say that in the future more people will be playing tetris than halo. I know people that still play Goldeneye on N64 because they love the interface and gameplay.

When the technology was more limited, the games were better. Designers were forced to make up for the lack of technology with creative ideas. I'm old enough to remember the Atari 2600 video game system from the late 1970's. That thing only had 4K of memory!!! Game designers were forced to use every last bit of that 4K, and in some cases were able to utilize "bank switching" which would effectively double the memory to about 8K (which resulted in on-screen flickering, by the way).
Now, the technology is so totally superior that designers rely on it more than on their creative abilities. You get games that look great, but they aren't as fun.

I agree too. I still play my old games because the new ones aren't any fun. 3D games would be fun if they didn't need to make them so complex to control. I do love Pitfall:The Lost Expiditions, but I can't find a single other game to play. And how about some game show games!?

Let me take you back to the early 80's when playing the Zork games were the best. No graphics at all but you would put in full sentences of what you wanted to do and it would respond. Even swearing and trying to kill your self when stuck was met with a humorous response from the game. All mental visualization....now that was good gaming.

I love tetris and mario : ) but now, i'm only seeing 3D games being advertised.
It seemed like every year for Christmas, people were getting a new game station every year. Nintedo 64, all the wat to Playstation, PS2, X box X box 360.
I still love Nintendo 64
I agree with you that more people will start playing tetris, mario, ect, more, but who knows with what's come out already : (

All the 2-D Castlevania games kicked 3-D Castlevania butt! Some games just look better as 2-D and some look better as 3-D. Look at Okami as another example-Clover Studios was going to make it a 3-D game, but they decided that it looked much more stylized and held more beauty looking like watercolor and being a 2-D game.
2-D rawks my sox!
