I am taking an antibiotic for 21 days for a very serious sinus infection.
When I went to the doctor the other day, I weighed ten pounds more, then two weeks prior before I started taking it. I know it is becasue of the drug, but doctors only say, oh, I doubt it.
I have noticed this with several medications. While I am taking them, I don't seem to get hungry or full, so basically I eat less, but my stomache is quite bloated, and my pants get tight.
Why do doctors always say this is impossible?
I have read books that say this is true, but a doctor, oh, no it shouldn't, or couldn't.
Why is the medical profession so deceiving?

They DEFINITELY can affect your weight. The medical profession will tell you no for many reasons. A lot of doctors actually DON'T KNOW!!! I am currently going off an antidepressant and it is like hell. My doctor doesn't understand and keeps telling me it's not that bad. They really have no clue.
Also, they don't tell you because then you won't take the meds and then they won't make any money. But, when you are sick, what choice do you have?
Try looking for another doctor, but keep doing your own research!

It is not the doctor you should be asking about the weight gain. You should speak to the Pharmacist. They are the specialists when it comes to meds. Most doctors will prescribe the meds that they feel comfortable with and have seen results in the past. Often they even prescribe based on the last promotional material they have read from the companies that manufacture the drug. I am not saying the doctors give the wrong medication... just that as a general rule most doctors truly have no idea what the side effects of the drugs are.
I know from experience that medication can cause weight gain... even though I did not feel like I was eating as much. I am a small guy to begin with, so 5 lbs is significant to me.
Honestly, I think you should speak to the local Pharmacy where you got the medication. Those people behind the counter are the true specialists when it comes to meds, how to take them properly and especially the potential side effects

Your doc might just not KNOW enough to say, "Yes, this can make you gain weight." I was on a med for over a year before a paper came out implicating the drug in weight gains averaging 12-15 pounds. When I started it, nobody knew this was a side effect. After a year when thousands showed the weight gain, they decided it must be related.
We can't answer why YOUR doctor did anything, but I don't think it's right to ask, "Why is the medical profession so deceiving?"

Yes some do. Steroids for instance definitely add weight, certain diabetic drugs do as well.
You might wanna think about a new doctor or at least getting a second opinion. Besides 21 days is an awful long time to be on an antibiotic isn't it. I hope you have at least gotten some relief from the sinus infection.
All the best.

with some drugs, absolutely. Im in the pharmacy profession, so YES it does happen. It shouldn't with an antibiotic, but everyone's body is different, so the way your body processes a drug would not nessecarily be the same as mine. Get another doc- or a second opinion. Sounds like yours is not taking your concerns seriously.

Some medications can certainly cause you to gain weight, either by bloating or increasing your appetite. Antibiotics typically don't, but they do kill some of the normal bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, so it stand to reason they could cause some bloating and discomfort.
