It's hard... in fact it's downright evil. Of course you're going to be affected, but not in the way you think. It is so amazingly awkward to have to do a sex scene, or even a passionate love scene in a room full of people. You're making out with this girl you met a week ago, and not only do you have to be naked, but you have to make it look like you're really going at it while your director, sound guy, scrpit supervisor, and a whole crew are in there watching. It sucks. It's not fun at all, and it's freakin scary. But in the end its something for you and your castmates to joke about.

When you are in a room full of people with cameras and directors barking orders and having to do multiple takes, their acting ability is the only thing that convinces us that it is truly as hot and heavy as it seems. But, since you mention the Notebook, I'll also mention Cruel Intentions and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. All three involve sex scenes that led to real relationships outside of the movie set. I don't think any actor walks away like it was just "fine" and there is a high divorce rate among actors as well, usually involving co-stars developing relationships beyond the screen.

Rumor is that the two actors from The Notebook are now engaged in real life. It came off as intense on-screen because they were actually very attracted to each other in reality. Lots of actors hook-up after making a movie together. My question is, how can actors be in a relationship and their partner is okay to watch them do a scene with someone else and not be jealous over it...?

And for the one's that 'walk away' - they probably have to joke around about it to get out of character again. I've heard that male actors apologize to a sex scene partner in advance for if they get aroused, and also for if they don't. That would be awkward. For him.

Some people can treat it as acting, be really into for the moment, and walk away having just done their job. Others, find it hard to separate their working fantasies from their real life realities... There are plenty of examples of both, so it does seem to matter on whom is involved and the circumstances of the actors and their lives at that moment. History is full of many examples of actors falling in love because of their interaction on stage or before the cameras. Those make news, while the many more that can treat it as part of their jobs, don't get as much notice...

It's called "showmance" and it can happen to anyone.
