It is called a pap smear. Your doctor scrapes your cervix for multiple testings. It is sometimes a little uncomfortable but not painful. Please be sure to go annually!! good luck

It depends on who does it, I have had it done by many different medics. The first was a lovely GP's nurse and it didn't hurt at all. Then I had it done by a female Doctor and it was awful, it didn't hurt but she put her whole hand inside me (as if I was having an internal after having a baby) and I felt as if I had been raped, I was told by a friend to ask for the male Doctor next time, which I did, it was quick and didn't hurt.
I moved areas and our GP's don't do it or the nurses at the surgery so I go to the local clinic, it is OK (I've just had mine) the doctor was a lady and reassured me and it didn't hurt at all.
How it's done is as the others here have told you.
Hope it's not too much info. Good luck!

a smear test is where a small spatchelor (like a plastic lolly stick) is inserted into your vagina to collect cells from the sides of the cervix,n which are then sent to a lab to check to see if you have any abnormal cells which need to be treated. It doesnt hurt just feels a bit uncomfortable but if you are sexually active you ought to have regular smears to keep you in check..once you have had one your inhibitions go so the next one isnt so scary!! i recently wen to a sexual health clinic and was told that normally smear tests are not done till the age of 25, but if you are sexually active, with out precautions, then they may take 1 earlier.
how graphic would you like me to be ?
basically you lie down and relax, they enter something in you witch opens up the walls so they can get a clear swab of you cervix. it can be un-comfortable, but if u are not relaxed then it can increase pain. hope this is helpful :)

a pap smear test is when a gynocologist opens your vagina, taks a swab (like a q-tip) and swabs the inside, thus aquiring cells, which are then placed onto a petrie dish and sent to the lab to check for cancer cell, abnormalities, some check for stds.
Get one after your first sexual experience or when you turn 18, whichever comes firts and it is done YEARLY!!!!

Oh mate I can't be the only female wincing out here.
It's an internal vaginal exam where the cervix is swabbed (stick scrape) and the cells that are removed are tested for cancer and whatnot

a swab is taken from the cervix at the top of the vagina. they use an instrument called a speculum and a litle cotton bud. its painless, and especially if you relax. they send it to be tested and you get results in 6-8wks
