Put a magnet on it. if it sticks to the magnet it's fake. If it doesn't stick to a magnet it's real. Same with silver too.

Gold jewelry in the USA will have a 10k 14k or 18k stamp on it to signify it's gold content, the higher the number the more gold in it. Jeweltry is made of gold and another base metal smelted together, usually copper to give it strength. Pure gold is soft.

For electroplate, you may also see a 10K stamp on it or 14k stamp, but it will have an extra letter E which signifies it is elecroplate, so 10KE or 10E. This means 10 karrat gold electroplate.

White gold is actually more expensive. I am very traditional with jewelry. I prefer silver but I wanted a gold engagement ring, so I have a solitaire diamond in a white gold setting. It looks very much like an engagement ring. (My fiance proposed with a temporary ring and then let me pick out what I wanted.) Keep in mind that your wedding band will most likely be the same color gold, and that your husband's does not have to match--my fiance is going to have a plain yellow band with a stamp. Think also about what you already wear. If you wear a lot of silver, it goes well with white gold, but if you wear a lot of yellow gold, then you might want to think about yellow gold rings.

Simply: - Get a wight indicator.....and find the weight of the block u have.

- sink it in water, and measure the volume of spelt water.

Density= Mass/ volume

and gold has a known density......u can find it on the interenet

here is an examole site:
http://www.24carat.co.uk/densityofgoldandothermetalsframe.html

If it's pure gold jewelry then it will be bending everywhere because gold is soft, it is bendable..the only way you'll be able to wear it is with a metal base. That's why you have the 10k, 14k, 24k, etc..system.

I believe all real jewelry must have a stamp. But to be certain, make sure you can return it before you buy it, run to an old pawnbroker. He knows everything. I wouldn't buy a hotdog off the street.
