If you have iTunes already installed and the iPod is connected to the PC, you could have it do an automatic update (to have the iPod mirror the songs you have in the library of the PC it's connected to).

To do this, Click on Devices--->Music-->Sync Music-->Select All Songs and Playlists.

The link below is the manual.

If you only want to update playlists-->Selected Playlists and choose the ones you want to update.

If you want to place the songs individually yourself, do the following...

Devices-->Music-->LEAVE SYNC MUSIC UNCHECKED.

None of your items will be erased. You will have to place music on it yourself by dragging and dropping (Artist, Album or Song) to your iPod in the Device List. And if you want to remove anything, you'll have to manually erase items in a similar way to the one I just described.
