Horror films give people an experience with death that they can still walk away from. We identify with the heros and whether they escape or not, we still can.
It's the same reason that many heroic epics involve heros who defeat death in one way or another (many Greek legends are like this). It gives us hope that death is not as permenant as it seems.

Various reasons, really. People like to be scared, shocked, or horrified once in a while- to feel your pulse race, and to be held in suspense over what happens next.
Personally, I prefer the eerie, makes you think kind of movie rather than the slasher flick, but the reaction is really the same.
I think this is just part of human nature. It's not a new phenomenon- and I am only glad that we have movies rather than say, gladiatorial conflict or public hangings like people used to use to get their fix. People have always sought out darker forms of entertainment. I think it's partially the suspense, and partially the "glad it isn't me" mentality that makes people stop and look at car wrecks.

Most of us are afraid of death.Watching horror films is just a way of dealing with it.Death,murder,ghosts,graveyards...etc.They all make us feel uncomfortable and it forces us to come face to face with our own mortality.
When we watch horror films or celebrate Halloween it's our way of making the uncomfortable, comfortable. There's also the thrill of being scared. When we feel afraid while we're still in a safe environment(like watching a movie in the safety of your home or a dark theatre),that's also a way of facing your fear.
Happy Halloween!

There is a part in everyone's brain that wants action. This action turns into you wanting a good rush. Some people need this and others do not. It can be quite dangerous if you need this in your life. The movie productions want the money and know what people want to see and hear.

Probably for the same reason people ride roller coasters. Getting that adrenaline rush without being in real danger. Some crave it more than others.

It's an unknown and people are fascinated by the unknown. I've seen enough of it up close and personal that I don't have any curiousity anymore about death and stuff.
