I live in Northern California, and every fall fruit flies infest the area, they are at my work, my home, etc. I have heard tricks in the past, I just can't remember them. I believe one involved wine.

Are they truly fruit flies?? The remove the fruit to the refrigerator. Are they fungus gnats from houseplant soil.......the make up a solution of dishwashing soap and water.......normal strength and pour through the soil. Or are these general gnats that should be outside? Assuming all window screens, doors are closed, then then pour several capfuls of PineSol down all drains, kitchen and bathroom. The suckers might be breeding in the trap.

Put an old piece of fruit in a bag that the bugs can get inside of, put the rest of whatever is attracting the fruit flies away (like in the fridge?) and then wait for them all to congregate in the bag, and quickly close and dispose of it! Seems to work for me!

You must live in an agricultural region. In SF the only fruit flys we get are those in our house if we happen to leave over ripe fruit out on the table.

Flies become a nuisance when they enter homes. You can get rid of these by using pest control.

Try vinegar in a small dish. They will all congregate in one place for easy elimination.

while i was in Africa i watched the locals. what they did was wait for it to land and than jut clap right over top of it. the fly has to jump up in order to fly. when it feels your hands coming, they jump and wham! right into you clap.after i learned this i sat and killed like 30 flies in the airport i was in.
be sure to wash your hands !!!!!!!
