Church's were tax excempt because they did a lot of charity work, education, hospitals etc. Sadly , they have evolved into businesses & lucrative one's at that. They should pay corporate taxes and claim what charity work they do like everyone else. The ones that really get to me are the Tele- Evangilists. I don't believe 5% believe what they are preaching, but they will send you a video for a DONATION of 29.95 or more. Note: Donation=tax exempt as oppossed to Price of = taxable. Sorry but you hit a nerve with this ques. Have a great weekend.

Religion influence or religious based rules or laws should not be a part of our government. It is no longer that churches stay within their limits but cross and get politically involved. Fundraising and getting donations for their political agenda, in that sense, they should pay taxes, they no longer are just a non profit organization that works with the needy. They now are political organizations pushing papers, thus entiteled to taxes. Yes, Anserman, they should.

oh i think so. ya got these multi million dollar mega churches making money hand over fist tithing getting tax exemption while they preach politics from the pulpit. those mega churches are disgusting displays of copious consumption and should be paying their fair share of taxes. i've never been able to grasp what grandiose buildings and royal vestments (or double breasted Armani suits) have to do with God and charity.

If they espouse the views of one party or encourage their congregations to vote for a single candidate then they have broken the laws regarding taxes and exemption for churches. They either need to be considered for-profit businesses or they need to re-register as PACs - not houses of God.

They should pay income taxes. I don't know why churches and clergy are exempted from the duty to pay taxes, we all pay our taxes as good citiznes do and it seems they are getting a free ride.

yes, they should have to pay taxes.
This tax exempt status is abused...but not only by religious groups!
To those who claim it's fair for non-profits! My azz....it's abused there too......perhaps you should look at what some executives get paid.
Case in point....Dick Grasso. Hahaha....bet he's singing the blues today!
GMAB...150 million pay out....oh my and NYSE is a non-profit entity!

I think that the church themselves should not be able to be taxed, however for anyone recieving an income i.e. pastors, deacons secretaries, etc. they should. I do however believe that Churchs should not be able to donate their funds toward political campaigns, due to the conflicting nature constitutionally. i.e. separation of church and state.

Only the black churches supporting Democrats are allowed to be politically active.
Any other churches will be destroyed for doing it.
Bill Clinton, the first black president, made it okay for black churches to be political organizations. His holding his Bible in church and crying made it possible. He had camera crews film it for the News Media.
