Once you hit the 2 year mark and there is still no ring, it can be expected that you will start getting little hints. After 5+ years expect the "When, When, When!!!" to start.
And it is TOTAL CRAP. This is the 21st century. If she is so set on getting married, she should ask you, or shut-up about it. Marriage isn't something to rush into, and if you're not ready you shouldn't let her pressure you. In fact, if she doesn't know and love you enough to see and understand that you aren't ready, then maybe you shouldn't be with her in the first place.

There is a great line a Cary Grant movie that says men are the true romantics. And I feel to some of us that is particularly important for us with the proposal. We want it to be a surprise and our idea. If you keep asking that makes it feel like its not our proposal, but just doing what you want.
Every man should feel free to create the proposal they want.
BTW, the only answer we really want to here is a scream of yes.
If you have to think about it or give a modest "yes" you should say no, because that implies we are then someone you are settling for or a sensible choice.
I did receive that answer once and later she said yes to which I said no too late. We didn't last that long after that. Don't know why, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

"she says i aint a powerful man or woman with force, hearth and ambishion" It's ambition, incidentally. Then there may be the entire use of capital letters, and some thing. Pet peeve of mine. In any case that one sentence describes precisely how she feels approximately you and why she is doing what she is doing. Nor does she have any motive to give up.What are you going to do? I'm a type of men who could say "bugger her off" ( I imply particularly, have a few self admire) nonetheless for a few motive you're keen on this lady. She desires a person with force, hearth and ambition and now not a dog puppy. It's time to develop a suite, take manipulate. and be the person she desires. Can you? Is that who you're? Otherwise, she is going to come round to dishonest on you. Then what is going to you do?

I am kind of in the same predicament. But, I have learned from watching my three closest friends that are married now and miserable. They are miserable because they got married because they felt like they had been together too long not to. So, the guys went along with it just to pacify them. The guys just weren't ready. Now, one of my friends is going through a divorce, the other one has a husband that stays out all the time and spends the majority of his free time with his friends instead of her and his kids. And then, the other friend decided that since she found out her husband cheated on her, that she would get revenge. So, that's what she did. She went out and had sex with a woman. So, I said all that to say this. As for me, I refuse to say anything else to my man about it. I know in my heart he is the man I am going to marry someday. But, I want him to take as much time as he needs to be sure that he is 100% ready because 99 won't do. Once he is ready, then our marriage will be blessed and it will last. So, when I look at it like that, it's worth the wait.

Men and women have their agendas and their timetables, sometimes they coincide. Mature couples who are both open and honest with one another find the time to put frank communication on their agendas so that questions such as yours can be addressed and answered.
That you feel the need to ask him "when..." is a clear indication that you have a specific timetable in mind but why beat around the bush, hint or anything esle when you can sit down with him and lay it all out? Both of you have committed years to the relationship as it stands so one could presume something is there, has bonded you so to speak. Now you want something more and you need to really talk with him openly and honestly about how you feel to see if he wants the same things you want.

8 years???
He is stringing you along.
Are you happy just dating him?
If you want to be married, agree to give the relationship another year. At that point, you get married or END it.
8 years is a long time to be hinting at wedding rings. He thinks that if he keeps mentionining it, you will stay with him.

Well you pretty much said yourself that you were bugging him.
Lay off the ring subject before you scare him off. He will do it when he is ready. A man will be happy to propose when he thinks it is his idea.
