I do know that American citizens are not exempt from this new law, and that only the President's opinion is all that matters, without ANY evidence needed. Is this the end of the American system of jurisprudence? With the suspension of the right of habeas corpus, are ANY of us safe from arrest and torture?

Not only that, he has the right to hold prisoners without charging them for a crime, and use any confession gained under extreme coersion (torture) against them. Sound familiar? How about the Salem witch trials and the Spanish Inquisition.

The navy commisions act isn't relatively whatever new. Historicaly we have now used navy commisions in virtualy each and every navy clash. Enemy warring parties are located beneath the Geneva Convention. That conference holds that un-uniformed contributors of a non-state entity (terrorists) don't seem to be afforded rights beneath the conference, and are categorized as "unlawful warring parties". The Patriot Act has been amazing (even in step with its critics). The truly query is whether or not or no longer it's constitutional. Thus a long way it's been upheld by way of each the consultant and judicial branches. In phrases of wrongful arrests and disappearances there are oversites constructed into each acts. While there's plenty of political posturing on those 2 acts by way of businesses each left (towards) and proper (in want) those acts are a lot more tame than acts used ago. Lincoln's suspension of Habeus and Roosevelt rounding up the Japanese for instance. Remember, up to you appear to worry this president, there are lots of tests constructed into our method (see what occurred to Nixon for instance). In international locations that actualy train civil repression we would not be having this public debate, do not need 2 events, do not need our authorized method and courts, and do not need the clicking. To acquire political elements plenty of men and women are making those acts out to be greater than they relatively are. For instance, the Patriot Act topics terrorists to the identical roving wiretaps which are allowed towards drug buyers. However, this will get made out to be a principal civil repression with out precedent.

I think that the problem with this act is that George Bush is not the only one that can use it to quiet dissenters. This will set a precedent for future people in charge and it is a very scary moment for the American people, both sides of the isle should be up in arms about this and the possibility for abuse that it allows.

Don't worry about it. They aren't going to get you right? We did this in WW2 and everyone was happy because they only arrested Japanese Americans, took away their homes and businesses and ruined THEIR lives. So you don't have anything to worry about. You aren't the one who's lives there are going to ruin, just somebody else's. Sorry, sarcasm doesn't translate very well here. This has been done many times before in American history, and it has always turned out badly. I don't see why this time is any different.

The ACLU would have you believe that, but if all that was true, do you think it would pass Constitutional muster? Do you think, if a law suit was filed, that any federal court, or the US Supreme Court would uphold it? I highly doubt it. Do some research on the matter FIRST. THEN make up your mind.

The Cat Who Went to Heaven: Terrorists have no rights under the U.S. Constitution, atleast none that the US is obligated to recognize. You speak as if terrorists were just average Americans. Nazi prisoners were not released until WWII was over. Do you know why? Because if they were released, they'd just go back to assist the enemy. Same thing with terrorists. How to avoid this problem? DON'T BE A TERRORIST!

Make sure you post the website that has the Act on so they can read it. I'm sure most people make assumptions and believe what they are told before reading if ever reading the law. Most people don't take the time to read the entire law before making a judgment.

Yes it is wrong and we will see how this administration uses it.

The CIA is watching you. You'd better be extremely careful when you go out as they will probably grab you as a terrorist and you'll wake up in Guantanamo.

Come on. Why does everyone have this paranoia. It's not like you are going to get snatched off the street for just standing there. If you are helping the enemy then you should have something to worry about.
