My husband and I have been married three years and got into an argument this morning. He has never hit me until today, and he bloodied my nose. I don't understand this reaction from him and wouldn't say I am in an abusive marriage but this has really shocked and hurt me. Is this abuse? Should I leave him for this?

Yes, it is abuse, but I can't agree with the thought of "get out now, while you can." I believe that it is possible for people to be remorseful, but I also think that you need to contact a marriage counselor TODAY, and when you see each other tonight, explain to him that you will not stand for him raising a hand to you and if he wants to keep you, he needs to go with you. If he refuses, you need to look into separation, but still keep your appointment with the counselor by yourself. They may be able to help you keep your resolve and assist you in finding additional support as you go through the process. Best of luck.

I would say that you are in an abusive marriage given your circumstance. The fact that you were hit is the first indicator! the further description of it being a hit that is hard enough to draw blood is truly appalling! you need to be safe so remove yourself from the environment quickly, as you don't know why you were hit is scary and could indicate that the problem lies with your husband and his Psyche. he may need help but your helping him needs to be facilitated in a safe environment. a person who hits a spouse has surly crossed a boundary and may not stop unless you clearly do not allow it this can be done in a couple of ways- you can leave him, press charges for assault, or seek counseling to clearly state you are not going to put up with a truly barbaric behavior. I don't really know how you feel but I do know I feel the pain for you no woman should ever be hit let alone be assaulted as you have been. my prayers will be with you!!!

Unfortunately, once that line is crossed it is easier to cross in the future and the abuse gets worse. Expect him to come home very apologetic and promising to never do it again, but don't trust that. You need a safe place to go, and if you want to restore the marriage I would recommend counseling; and some strong accountability so that he clearly knows what the repercussions will be if he abuses again.

Yes it is abuse. That being answered what is going on in his head? What buttom was pushed that sent him over that edge.
Only you can answer that. A lot of us have been on that edge before. Stepping off it is serious. You both need to sit down and CALMLY figure out what is going on. You may stay but could also be justified in leaving. Again your choice.
If you wish to remain married you both need to find out why this happened and make positive steps to prohibit its reoccurance.

i would definatly get out right away. i've been in an abusive relationship for almost 7 years, and i kept telling myself that he would change and that things would get better. needless to say they didn't. at first it was pushing me around, then he choked me till i past out and at the end he had a big knive to my throat. that's when i finally left.at the beginning i stayed because i really still loved him, when things got worse,i stayed because i was scared of leaving him,and then i was scared of being alone not being able to manage on my own. but i finally got out and i just wish i would have gotten out right away. so the decision is up to you. i hope you make the right one.

good luck and god bless

He sounds like a beginner, it could get worse, just keep that in mind. The next time you have a fight it could escalate. You have to look in your heart and do what you think is right for you. Good luck and if you decide to stay and he does it again, you better get out.
