Hardware softwares are installed seperately. Most of today routers have built in capability for providing security.

Software Firewalls are simple the software we download like zonealram...they can not only stop unauthorize access but also check trojans, viruses and other bad stuffs.

Best practice is to use both of them as couple i.e. at same time. As both offer different kind of service.

Like i said earlier, many routers have built in firewall so just buy a router and u r done.Im sure there must be stand alone routers too.
Firewalls (HW/SW) dont need as such system resources. Even at 750 Mhz u can setup a cool firewall n/w.
Protection level can be increased as per ur need.Higher the level, slower will be ur net speed as it will restrict many packets to flow.
for operating a hardware firewall ,u will need a 3rd party software, which usually comes with the hardware,in CD or Floppy...allow you to control the HW firewall features.

generally a hardware firewall is also a router. hardware firewalls generally provide better security than a software firewall; becuase not only do they check packets coming in an out, they also provide what is called NAT (network address translation) - which makes you invisible to the net. hardware firewalls don't use your pc's system resouces either, so that is another upside.. hardware is the better way to go.. hope this answers you question somewhat. I'm at work so it's tough to go too in-depth.

The software firewall is just software that is loaded onto someone's computer and just protects that computer. A hardware firewall is a device (box) that you connect many computers to and is used to protect all of the computers that are connected to it. The hardware firewall is known to provide better protection. Sometimes, firewalls are included in routers as well. Cisco and Checkpoint firewalls are great.
