It is OK to give your life for the Flag, but please do not make waves upon your return. Even if you are psychologically and physically impaired.

rustyshac..., that was rhetorical speech.. It was said to my uncle who fought for the flag up to 1972. He lost 16 members of his platoon in one month alone. Please let's not b sanctimonious. These things do happen in America.

Readding justagrandma's answer brings me to the conclusion that the real problem here are the chickenhawks who have never experienced anything that are so disingenuous that they force me to bring the truth to their faces. People like her, like me, lived through those periods so we know what we are talking about.

Rick, rest assured that the people of the Middle East know and recognize what you say is true. All it takes is for someone to take their heads out of the sand, look at the global picture to agree with what you say. I suspect the insurgents are going to fight to the last man standing to ensure that what you say doesn't come to past.

sargeloda.., Thank you for that. I know several returnees myself. Some who thought it would be a way of sponsoring their education. I know what I am talking about and false patriotizm isn't my thing.

Whether they are treated like the Vietnam vets is up to you.

As for your comment, "please do not make waves upon your return," I think it's an insult to our military personnel and very uncool.

What you don't hear in the press is house the VA benefits were cut. Yes they get immediate medical treatment and rehab while in the service but once they are released from duty they cannot find jobs. Their medical disability is nothing to live on.

As far as I know everyone treats these people with respect and that is what they should receive. If you own a business you should hire them when they come home.

The only similarity to Nam is that this is an illegal war and the U.S. lied to go in and invade. It has nothing to do with the people who wear the uniform and serve their country. They are under orders. They believe in what they are doing. There are some bad seeds but for the most part I think the average American is compasionate towards other people. I'm sure the soldiers are trying to help the average citizen over there while policing the streets. I'm sure they are doing their best.

I am a democrat. I don't believe in this war nor do I support some of the decisions this president has made. I'm sure after 9/11 he had some tough choices and made some bad choices. As much as we all would love to say we hate this guy he is not the only one making the decisions. He has many advisors he listens to. Many money men bigger than him that rule him.

I have heard from someone who has worked at the white house is one of the reasons why we are in Iraq is for Real estate...now we are in a central area to invade any middle east country we want without permission from Turkey to fly over their airspace and the other is OIL.

I am a Iraqi II vet and I'm not asking to be treated like a Vietnam vet but I want the help I feel I need even if I have served my time and now out of the military

No, there isn't the animus that there was for the Viet Nam vets.
In that war, when we lost we blamed the men who fought there, now we blame the leaders. Viet Nam was a public relations nightmare for the leadership, who did not back the men, but rather ran for cover. It was not politics finest hour. Even the Veterans of Foreign Wars didn't want anything to do with the returning Viet Nam vets. They figured they won their wars and the long haired, pot-smoking, hippies lost theirs. It was as much an age and class thing as it was a combat thing. It was shameful. The draft insured it wasn't the rich and powerful that went, they went to college and/or married, the poor and those without resources or influence went, unless they offered themselves up, and not many did that.

say what? I don't understand what you mean "going to be". Our vets from Iraq have arrived home on visits and some to stay. Maybe you ask the quetion because you are not living near a military base so you haven't seen for yourself the praise and acknowledgment.

As I recall, the vets from the Vietnam War complained mostly because when they got back home there were no jobs for them. There are lots of jobs now for the military.

You obviously have no idea what happened to the Vietnam vets.

Of course they will be treated the same way. Unfortunately the young guys the recruiters pick up are dumb and inexperienced enough to learn from history and those who came before them. They are blinded by either the "lure" of money, glory or simple stupidity and do not realize that they are used as canon fodder for a war that was unjust from the beginning.

Sure they are. Promises will fade into VA budget cuts and higher salary's for Congress.

I doubt they will be. When the military come back from deployment, I see hoards of family members waving flags and holding signs. I don't see anyone calling them "baby killers."

I hope the vets are treated better than the Vietnam Vets were. They deserve honor and respect.
