I think there is a happy medium. Do both. I have found that by trying new things you grow as a person. As far as your culture, take what you feel is important and expand on it. Isn't this how cultures came about?

As my Mom always said, times change but people don't. We all still want the same things in life. Technology has changed the job market, but, it doesn't have to change our personal lives. We still have control over that. Friendships can still be about actually going out and having fun as opposed to IM'ing people that you only know via the internet.

Now, whether you choose to accept an "old" culture depends on what you're calling old. Are you talking about the 70's where everyone was really selfish and didn't care about anyone other than themselves? If that's old to you, then I say change. If you're talking more about the 50's when people were friendly even to strangers they just saw on the street, then I say don't change it.

Culture is a living thing - it grows and evolves. To accept new ways of living does not mean letting go of all your own traditions. There is a certain amount of compromise that can be made.

The old and the new both contribute to each other, it is a symbiotic relationship. Without the vigour and daring of youth new ideas and boundaries will not be found. Without the wisdom and caring of age old traditions, there will be no one left to remind us of our mistakes.

If you are truely caught between two worlds, look at it simply, try adding meaning to life by following the philosophy: "Make a contribution and be happy."

Yes. I live in a very multi-cultural city. However, I believe that the new language of your new country needs to be learned and you should be acceptable to your new environment. I think that you can do both ... family roots are very important and there is no need to give up your old culture.

"Old is gold"it is what our parents practice and teach us therefore that becomes our foundation. It is up to us to build upon that foundation and return the favor to our parents. If you're an immigrant or a first generation in a new country-you'll know what I mean. Our parents work hard and they themselves are lost and confused not to mention being bombarded by new languages, cultures, practices which is why most become so cultural and hang on tighter to their own traditions and values. They knowing their fear want to protect their children and start impaling them with it,not realizing that they themselves are hurting their kids which is why it Ly's solely upon the children to integrate, understand,be and show respect to their family so they can welcome these new ways without alot of fear and thus allowing everyone to grow and prosper.Parents teach children and Children teach parents ideally,or at least that is what I think.
