Was reading some questions on here the other day, and there was a contraceptive women were on where they didn't have a period for 3 months...does anyone know what this is called as I want to ask my doctor about going on it. Thank you!

I was on the depo shot for 3 years and I never had a cycle the whole time I was on it. It was great. But you have to be real careful not to gain weight. I gained 10 lbs after taking it. But now that I don't take it anymore the weight fell right off with out even trying.

Seasonale, produced by Barr Laboratories, is an extended-cycle oral contraceptive — which means it is a birth control pill taken for 91 days as opposed to the common 28 — that causes women to menstruate only four times a year.
Barr Laboratories conducted market research and found that women were the most comfortable getting their period every three months. She said many women were not ready to completely suppress their menstrual cycle, although she said that could be possible with other contraceptives.
Some women feel it is abnormal to suppress a menstrual cycle and are concerned that during the three months, an excess of lining would build up in the uterus as the hormone progestin in oral contraceptives makes the uterus a less desirable place for the egg by stopping buildup of the uteral lining.
Seasonale contains levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol, the same estrogen and progestin combination found in most oral contraceptives. Comparing Seasonale to Nordette, a birth control pill with the same chemical entities that is also on the market.
Seasonale has the same side effects as other birth control pills. These include nausea and headache, along with the risk of more serious side effects (especially for women who smoke) such as blood clots, stroke and heart attack.

You can do this with your own contraceptive pill...just skip the sugar pills and carry straight on with the hormone pills. You might spot. My friend did this for years with no side effect....BUT when she did allow herself to bleed what a vengeance mother nature took on her...YIKES.
With regard to if its bad for you well there are some theory's about it. Firstly cave women were pregnant from early teens and had babys more or less yearly and therefore only had maybe 3 periods a year and there was no breast cancer or uterine or ovarian cancer...Yes they only lived into there early 20's most were killed and eaten by animals lol so who knows what might have happened. Our bodies do not seem to need to bleed every month ...it doesnt harm us when we pregnant missing 9 months of it but speak to an OBGYN rather then a GP as they are the ones who know most about a woman and her cycle.
Are you finnshed with your family? Thats another thing you should consider. Since the introduction of the hormonal pill in the 60's the increase in breast, ovarian and uterine cancer has been creeping up, dramatically the last few years because more and more younger women start taking the pill instead of letting our bodies run us. So consider all your options for long term pill use. There is a procedure that doesnt interfer with your hormones you can still ovulate and have your uterus, they cauterize ( burn) the uterine lining, preventing it from thickening every cycletherefore no bleeding, and of course you cannot fall pregnant as no implantation can take place. Speak to your OBGYN if he/she is aware of it...in South Africa it is abriviated to TREC.

Depo shot Everyone I know that have been on it gained weight anywhere from 10 to 20 lbs. The pill is the best for not gaining much weight. Just if your responsible enough to take it everyday. There all different types of birth control for woman. Just find what works for you.

I did not read about this pill anywhere yet but keep in mind that the period is the way the body cleans out the uterus to avoid having decay of endometrial lining inside the womb. Do you really want your body to stop cleaning itself for three months? There is Primolut N which stops it from coming for 2 weeks, would that not be sufficient?

There are several on the market, I have provided a reference page for you that gives all the information you may need. Actually the elimination of a period is a side effect.

Good luck
