cling film or plastic, and why?

At the moment i'm using a roll of foil a week for my child's lunchbox, surely this isn't good!

Your question asked about what's best for the environment and -- in my opinion -- that is aluminum foil. Aluminum is a natural material and can be easily recycled. Refining aluminum takes electricity but not much in the way of solvents or other metals.

One problem with aluminum is that it is dissolved by acids. Aluminum salts then end up in your food, hurting the taste and possibly causing you to ingest too much aluminum. But that's not an environmental issue and you asked what's better for the environment.

Plastics are made from petroleum and we all know about where petroleum comes from. Petroleum is messy to refine and making plastics takes solvents that need to be processed and disposed. The plastic wrap gets thrown away and can't be easily recycled. Just as with aluminum, food can pick up some chemicals from plastic wrap but it's not a big problem.

On the balance, it's my opinion that aluminum foil is better for the environment than plastic wrap.

Why don't you get the Glad-ware at the grocery store, they come in every shape and size. I prefer it over Tupperware, because its cheap, you don't have to worry about loosing it, and it can be washed in the dish washer safely won't turn red from spaghetti sauce. Its a lot less costly than buying a roll of foil a week....and for things that you don't feel should have a box, get the mini lunch box zip-lock bags(my grandma taught me a trick, you put the used bags over some of the dish holders in the top part of the dish washer and you can re-use each each bag till you feel it should be tossed out)...last resort would be cellophane wrap, since it has to be tossed...but at least you won't have your child be the foil bug at school...Also have your child bring lunch in an insulated, lunch bag that can fit into the backpack. It keeps the food from overheating and spoiling, and will be easy for your child to put the glad-ware and zip-locks right back into.
Plastics don't give the food a funny taste, and are easy to sanitise for re-use...but i don't recommend just tossing it since it cannot decompose at the land-fills. But foil isn't really that much better since the schools don't have recycling bins for it; therefore it just goes along with the plastics to the dumps.
So my recommendation is:-

Glad-ware- right in the supermarket, cheap, sturdy, re-usable, comes in sets of four(so you don't have to worry washing everyday), comes in all shapes and sizes, does not stain like Tupperware, lasts a very long time, don't have to worry about your child loosing it since it is easily replaced
Zip-Lock- comes in many sizes for convenience, cheap, can be re-used if washed in the dish washer, save space in lunch box, keeps sticky stuff from getting everywhere

...and only cellophane as a last resort, since it cannot be sanitized therefore should not ever be re-used for health reasons.

Actually, you could buy tupperware. There are pieces of tupperware that are the perfect size for sandwiches. Start using those and instruct your child to bring them home at the end of the day. They can be washed and reused every day. That would be very helpful for the environment.
