"If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have a paradise in a few years."

--Bertrand Russell

Sometimes Y!A makes me feel like I just crawled out of a bomb shelter while the bombs were still flying.

I posted in this section because this section along w/ religion and politics is where i see the most hate. the most of people trying to change others who have opinions/lifestyles that differ. I guess I was feeling as if I see more people worrying about making sure others aren't happy, trying to fix them and change them, in these categories, then I see people just worrying about themselves. So The It Girl, no implication at all, Gay people don't cause unhappiness, nor do liberals, or atheists. but people trying to fix them, and hurling hateful awful things at them were making me feel kind of sad... so I put up a question.

Yes, but I see what your saying. People come on this site to spread hate all the time.

I'll like Russel, but that question is a sort of "how long have you been beating your wife" one. One seems selfish and one seem mean-spirited. I want to be happy, but not at the expense of others or the exclusion of all else. I have no desire to see others unhappy.

When I was single I sought my own happiness, after getting married I placed my own happiness and comfort behind that of my wife first and my children second--(WIFE is always first over children). With my wife's comfort and happiness premier in my life I have become much happier than I EVER was as a single person. Maybe that's why we've been married blissfully for 26 years.

Don't let it. Try to find the positves that Y!A offers. There are some incredible and wonderful people here who have a lot to offer. Unfotunately it seems like the negatives tend to outweigh the positives some day. Look hard, though. The good is there!!!

That depends exactly how it is that you define happiness. Both my sexual orientation and my religion make many people "unhappy" and uncomfortable. In no way am I willing to even consider changing those aspects of my being simply to make others who don't like it happy. Does that make me selfish? No.
All things considered, I AM willing to make sacrifices for others happiness(especially the happiness of my loved ones) but not to the point in which I cannot provide for myself the basics needed to keep myself going.

Yes, I'm sure I do. At first I thought the quote said "...more than the happiness of others" which would make it a difficult question.

I am not sure what you are implying. Are you implying that unhappiness is caused by Gay people? Are you telling us to shut up? I don't understand.
