Just curious.
Is there any reason why the driver's seat is either left or right side of the car? Why not in the middle?
Is it technically difficult to do that? Anyone knows about this?
Thanks

Imagine having to sit there and ALWAYS being forced to place your feet on either side of that hump. It would make a long drive unbearable.

Also, in a subcompact car, there would not be enough room left for any passengers in the front. Your elbows would be poking their face every time you turn.

Actually I think it's a great idea. Most drivers in cars don't drive with a passenger anyways. Can you imagine a compact car with only one seat in the front with a steering wheel. It would give the driver an enromous amount of room. Give those SUV drivers that drive big surburbans around, but don't have anyone else in the vehicle a good reason to consider a single seated vehicle. You could have various ammentities placed around the driver.

Personally I think it would be great. Still would have to route the linkages for steering around the engine, (which is why I believe it is off center) because you're steering wheel and all the linkages that connect it to the steering mechanism need to get around the engine, which usually sits in the center. But with the eventual ability to drive by wire technology, it may be possible to develope this in the future.

If the steering wheel were to be placed in the center of the vehicle then it would leave you with a girl on the right and one on the left which would constitute beligamy which is illegal. Therefore, they put it right or left to keep you in line with your women or men in some cases where the woman is the driver. We won't go there so don't even mention what I know you're thinking!

Maybe because if it were in the middle, there would be no place for a passenger, unless the car was made much wider. It might also be sort of cumbersome to have to clamber into the seat rather than just sitting down once you open the door.

Hmmm, I'm assuming you have not seen this super car - the Mclaren F1....

That sweet (but nasty) car has the steering wheel in the center.... Look it up some where...

But as for your question, guess it is due to practice reasons - How does a guy spit out the window when he's in the middle?

(heh, noticed that no babes spit out the window yet...)

So you don't have to climb over a seat to drive, you just open a door, and get in the first seat.

Quite simple answer really.
