The sheeplebes voted themselves bread & circuses.
This has always been the point where a nation or civilization starts its decline.
It is why universal suffrage wasn't such a good idea.

Because the Progressives have been running things for most of the 20th century, exploding gov't.
I defy you to find in our Constitution where the federal gov't is authorized to do things like National Parks, Social Security, Medicare, the Department of Education, Dept of Energy, etc.?
The Federal gov't has some well defined roles in the Constitution, and then the 9th and 10th Amendments basically say that if the federal gov't has not been specifically authorized to do something, it should butt out! We have strayed far and wide from what our founding fathers had intended.

Life was simpler, government was smaller, income tax was something new. It had to start somewhere, since the stock market back then was seen as a tax shelter, and businesses were using it to hide profits and keep wages low. The imperialistic world was heavily investing in the US and England was joining Europe in WW1. Things are much different and the cost of living is much higher now. Many things we bring upon ourselves

Because in 1914 we didn't have the multitudes of social programs that we have today. And that number will grow if the democrats have their way. This is the only issue they have been open and honest about. They will raise taxes.

The government is exponentially larger than it was in 1914. There was no medicare, medicaid, social security, welfare, or other sosical entitlement programs.
The military is a fraction of the size it is now and the population was a third the current size.

In 1914 We only had to buy a few horses and pop-guns for our military, and the only space we wanted to explore was Kansas.

You can blame the Democrats and there social programs. Social security, medicare, Medicaid, unemployment, Section 8 etc. We have to pay for these gifts some how.
