I have been invited to my partners xmas party at the Grange Hotel in Lond onand have been told we need to wear evening dress. I am told this means suit and tie for the men and women must wear dresses. I dont agree that evening dress means women have to wear a dress.

Evening dress for a woman means a smart evening dress. It does not have to be a long dress. It can be a short cocktail dress or that little black number that is so reliable.

Evening dress is formal wear without the "black tie" requirement. Unless you are an older woman (55+) then it is appropriate to wear a floor length dress. I would stick with black or deep red, since it is a Christmas party. Good luck!

In my experience 'evening dress' means wearing a dress for women.

It sounds like it might be a little more formal and if that's the case a dress is probably required (but could be short). If it's not you could probably get away with wearing a nice pant suit.

yes evening dresses mean women have to wear dresses. where were you brought up, the jungle? get a grip girl. an evening dress is a long elegant type of dress.

Frankly, if you either cannot be bothered to wear evening dress or wish to make a statement by wearing trousers, you would be better off letting your partner take his secretary while you slouch at home in jeans and a tea shirt.
