I have set up a limited access user acct ( I am the only one set up as an administrator acct) for my son on our family PC. Lately he has been able to get in, although he doesn't have the password. I believe that one of his hacker friends showed him a way to do it. How does he do it? How do I prevent him from doing it.

He is doing good.

Look the good side, he is learnig something, just put more stones in his way so he can learn more, but he will always be able to hack your machine, specially having physical access.

If you want privacy encrypt your files (PGP is a good one) keep your private key in a secure place and that's it. If he manages to reach your private key you will be safer if you choosed a good password (try some phrase with puntuacion, capitals and all that) if he finally manages to get into your private data, be proud of him, he has finally got a level of knoledge very few have.

By the way, if you finally use the PGP check your system for keyloggers. He may try to get your password that way.
There are physical and logical keyloggers. The physicals are connected between the keyboard and the computer so that anything you type is stored in a buffer that can later be read. Software are simple programs that stay in memory hidden capturing all the key strokes. Google search for info on how to control this to avoid him installing one of those.

I sincerely feel sorry for you. Actually it is against the law for anybody on "answer", to give you in depth details on how to hack into a computer or system.

As a parent you should be more concerned about the fact that your son has committed a criminal act againt his own parent.

My professional advise to you is that you should confront your son and sit him down and have a very long indepth talk with him about how he has failed to show you respect. How starting out with a small criminal act against a parent can lead to a much larger crime where he may get the urge to try and hack into a government agency and then you will not only have to pay out hugh fines, legal expenses and in addition you son may find himself doing jail time.

His entire young life will be down the tubes. No body wants to employ a criminal when he becomes an adult if he is not already an adult.

Plus I would ground him and also ban him from using the family pc for atleast one month. If he does it while grounded extend the time two month. Plus take away other things that you may give him.

Also if you know who is friend is that is showing him how to hack into computers you should call this friend's parents an advise them that their son it making a criminal out of your son.

None of this is very nice, an as always the parents are always look like the, "bad guys". Being a parent in this world of technology, having to work etc. ertc. is not a very easy job.

Please nip this in the bud right now before you find the FBI, if you reside in the United States or Interpol if you reside outside the United States knocking at your door. Your heart will broken plus your bank account if he his arrested for hacking.

By installing the hosts file, IE-SPYADs, SiteAdvisor and WinPatrol,
you will have a pretty good line of defense which won't use up any resources.
this is the link you reqire for the apps http://temerc.com/hddncounttuts.html......

for anti virus use http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
for spyware use ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

And of course a firewall is a must,
tho the XP SP 2 firewall is not sufficient in my opinion.
It only blocks incoming attacks, and should something get thru and that's always possible,
then it can call out to get more things installed or use your machine as a zombie
I'd recommend Zone Alarm, but one of the older versions from here:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=...

Either of the 4.5 versions seem to work best, less buggy than current on

for further help
see the sorce below, they will have all the answers
try them they are terrific,
they are computer pro's

Does the main account labeled ADMINISTRATOR have a password installed for it and not the defualt password for it? if it does not then thats how he is gaining access.
Most people fail to realise there is a main admin account in XP becasue it is hidden but it shows itself in safe mode or by hitting
ctrl + alt + del twice at the login screen.

Basically if your son, has local access to the machine he can have full access to it.

There a bootable CD's that allow you to access the entire filesystem.

Make sure it is all patched, maybe consider using filesystem encription for all documents etc. that you want to keep private.
