Depending on the age of the guest attending, and what sort of atmosphere you are trying to obtain, try lionel richie or something. Everyone loves him!

Do you have satellite radio? You can leave it on a smooth jazz or classical station. That'd be beautiful with no commercial interruptions.
If this isn't an option, do you have speakers for your computer? Go to Yahoo Music and leave on one of the free channels. They have very FEW commercials and stations like jazz, classical, soft pop, love songs, etc.
If this won't work either, I'd run to a music/video/electronics store (ie. Best Buy, Circuit City, etc) and look under the Jazz genre for a compilation of famous jazz music from various artists.
Good luck with your dinner. I'm sure that whatever you choose will be much appreciated and your efforts will be noticed!

It is your party, you should play something that you like, that reflects your personality.
My favorites: Nina Simone, Talking Timbuktu by Ali Farka Toure and Ry Cooder, John Lee Hooker, Portishead, Chris Smither
Good luck and remember the main point is to have fun. Don't worry too much about the details.

listen to a broad range of music and this will help you decide, or even ask the guests which type of music they like.
Urban hip hop music which features violence or swearing would not be a very good choice, I feel.

Go without music entirely - and then your guests won't be distracted by it and can hold proper dinner party conversations - might be more interesting than Musak anyway.
If you're anywhere near Brighton - Can I come too????
