Check the laws for your state. As far as immigration goes, if he could support himself before the marriage then he should be able to support himself after the marriage. He's saying that to stay with you longer. If he gets five years from you he's a citizen so then he will be legal anyways. But I would talk to an immigration attourney or check out www.USCIS.gov. That's the Immigration website you can look up the answer for your state.

I don't know how the law works where you live, but in Mississippi if you divorce him, all you have to do is report it to INS and he is deported. I have never heard of having to support him and I can't imagine that is true. I have a friend who is sort of in the same situation, her husband married her so he can become legal, but they have to stay married 5 yrs before that happens. She is thinking about divorcing him and has been told to just report him if she does. Good luck.

I was also married to an immigrant, and no u do not have to support them for 10 years if u choose to end the marriage. all u need to do is contact immagration, and let them know that the marriage is being ended. (they may ask why) just be honest and explain the best u can.
there is also the chance that they will send ur exspouse back to his country till he can legally come back to this country.

Ok listen if you have file for immigration for him you are resposible for 10 year that does not necessarely mean you have to take of them for that long it just that if they did get their green card the person decide to get on welfare the Gov will ask you to reimburse the money that is giving to him/her
that is all
and also it is not only if you married to the person
my friend is reimbersing money to the gov because her sister in law (husband sis) prefer welfare than work and she was the one that file for them

Why would you or anyone marry an immigrant first of all? There are many Americans out there who gain nothing from marriage. I believe that alot not all immigrants marry here to stay here!!!!!!!!

No, that is not true at all. Moreover, if he married you strictly to gain citizenship the divorce can be annulled as fraudulent.

Did you sign any papers stating that you would support him? If not, don't worry, if you did, have your head examined
