A Met is a player who plays for the New York Mets. The New York Mets actual name is the Metropolitans. Most people would agree that for a sports team the name Mets sounds better than Metropolitans. This is why they are known as the mets.

Well, if you are talking about the NY Mets, Met is short for Metropolitan. They're owned by the city of New York (and are the only city-owned pro baseball team). If you look at the logo on their scoreboard, behind it is a city skyline.
