The radical sign, which resmbles a V, means you're taking a root. If no number is put in the angele of the radical, then you're taking the square root; if a number is put, say n, then you're taking the n root of the number in the radical.

A radical notation is used for roots of numbers. The most common form is the square root. In this case, the number is just placed inside the radical sign. The link I provided in the source window will show you a picture of one. If there is a small raised number on the left, outer part of the radical sign, that becomes the root. For example, placing a 3 there, changes it from a square root to a cube root.

A root is a number that is multiplied by itself the stated number of times to equal the number inside the radical. Hence, the square root of 64 is 8. The cube root of 27 is 3.
