In an extreme emergency,as a last resort,if you absolutely have to drive the car,say- to the hospital because you are dying-any fluid thats not carbonated will work.A bunch of you will give me a bad rating for this answer, but if your LIFE depended on it you could use other than brake fluid. If my or my daughters life were at stake--I'd use tranny fluid , engine oil, antifreeze ,washer fluid, milk ,ice tea---ANYTHING.Remember-its a hydraulic system, you CAN'T compress fluid. The system CAN be restored.

There is not a substitute for bake fluid, although there are different types of fluid, ( DOT 3 DOT 4 and DOT 5) 3 & 4 are glycerine based and 5 is silicone based. Do not mix them. use only what the manufacturer recommends for you vehicle. the principle that hydraulic brake work on , is that a liquid does not compress when you try to compress it by stepping on the brake pedal, the fluid in turn squeezes the brake pads, or shoes against the rotor or drum to stop the vehicle

There is nothing you can substitute! If it were an off road vehicle or farm tractor, something of that nature then non-detergent 10W or hydralic oil would probably do the job! DO NOT use anything else but the recommended brake fluid for your vehicle driven on the highways for everyone's saftey concerns!

No substitutes. Use what the manufacter installed in your vehicle. you can not mix fluids. It will get and cost you a lot more in replacing hoses and calipers and wheel cylinders.
good luck.........
