It is the abbreviation of 3rd-generation technology. It is one of the newest mobile technology standards. It provides the ability to "transport" both voice (phone calls) & non-voice data (i.e., text messagings, video game play, web browsing ...) in an "efficient" way. hence speed up the webbrowsing speed and so on.

Currently this technology is only avaible in Japan and Korea markets.

It is more than just internet on the phone. That was achieved with 2.5G aka GPRS.

The radio technology is different, it uses spread spectrum principles. The bandwidth is greater than 2.5G, but this decreases if lots of people are using it.

The core network is different too. Everything is carried over Internet Protocol, in 2/2.5G there is stil some "circuit switched" communication which uses channels optimised for voice.

3G is now widespread. Most countries have 3G networks. In the UK, the 2/2.5G networks Orange and Vodafone have 3G networks too. The new network operator "3" only have a 3G network (although you can roam onto O2 and soon Orange if you have no 3G coverage)

3G refers to the third generation of developments in wireless technology, especially mobile communications. The third generation, as its name suggests, follows the first generation (1G) and second generation (2G) in wireless communications.

3G includes capabilities and features such as:

•Enhanced multimedia (voice, data, video, and remote control).
•Usability on all popular modes (cellular telephone, e-mail, paging, fax, videoconferencing, and Web browsing).
•Broad bandwidth and high speed (upwards of 2 Mbps).
•Roaming capability throughout Europe, Japan, and North America

3G offers the potential to keep people connected at all times and in all places
