CAD is generally used in the design of buildings and building related systems by architects and engineers. I'm unaware of it being used as a game platform. While such a course would give him a leg up if he plans on going into drafting, I don't think it will be very helpful to him in designing video games.

CAD doesn't have a lot to do with video games, it's for architects. He'd probably become good at designing environments and cityscapes for animated characters to run around in, but it seems like going the long way around to pick that up. Most CAD classes are vocationally-oriented anyway, so I think he'd be bored silly.

No . CAD is meant for mechanical enginners, not animation. There are a couple of gaming schools coming up. Though I think he should specific of the field in gaming he'd want to go for. Is it in the game design or in the game art side? Primary for game desing is some programming in C++ and further into Visual C++ and Direct X SDK. For art, he should learn some 3d modelling software like 3d studio max.

Apogee - the gaming group that has created famous games like Duke Nukem, Max Payne, Prey had a series of interviews on gaming programmers of both types - game design and game artists. Your son could go to http://www.3drealms.com/legacy.html to view how gaming comes about. Another tip is he go to the company webpages of his favorite games, check out the profiles of the people they hire. Writing to gaming company recrutiters really does help to.

Hope this helps.
